Port of Barcelona

cHAMeleon will contribute significantly to meet the plans of the Port of Barcelona to promote and accelerate the use of LNG to tackle growing air pollution and GHG emissions in this key core node of the Mediterranean Corridor. The plan to promote the use of gas as alternative fuel for road and marine transport was launched after local environmental organisations issued a warning about high levels of air pollution in October 2014. Currently, the port of Barcelona is working plans to construct infrastructure necessary to provide ships and terminal machinery with LNG within the next two years. One of the projects related to the plans of the port is another CEF funded project, CLEANPORT (2014-ES-TM-0711-S), which will address an alternative maritime power solution by having clean efficient electricity generation on-board of the ship. In this sense, cHAMeleon will contribute with the plans of the Port of Barcelona by providing infrastructure to supply L-CNG for the road transport sector. It should be noted that today, traffic in the Port of Barcelona is over 40 million tonnes, many trucks are entering and leaving the Port or using short sea shipping services (above 110.000 UTI), and many companies have their logistics centre established there or nearby. Moreover, It should be highlighted that the route from Barcelona to Lyon has recorded one of the highest traffic volumes of freight transport, together with the route from Torino to Maribor.
